LEAD: Empress Michiko's poems to be published in French: report

(Kyodo) _ (EDS: ADDING 5TH GRAF)

A collection of 53 poems written by Empress Michiko will be published in French along with the original Japanese works possibly in late January, the Sankei Shimbun newspaper reported Wednesday.

The poems, written in the classical "waka" style, are mainly chosen from "Seoto" (sound of the stream), a collection of the empress's 367 poems written between 1959 when she got married to Emperor Akihito and 1996, according to the paper.

This will be the first time that her poetry will appear in French in book form, the Sankei said.

Waka was developed by Japanese court aristocrats in the sixth century and they typically consist of 31 syllables in a five-line pattern of 5-7-5-7-7, which is longer than the more popular "haiku" style of poetry.

Agnes Tapie de Celeyran, the proprietor of the publisher Signatura which is planning to release the book, was quoted as saying that waka is less known in France compared with haiku and that the empress's poems will provide opportunities for French people to know about the Japanese art of waka.

The poems are translated by Tadao Takemoto, a professor emeritus at the University of Tsukuba and a scholar on the late French novelist Andre Malraux. The French translations will be overseen by French novelist Olivier Germain-Thomas, the paper said.
