2ND LD: Machine troubles force 453 to retake English listening test
(Kyodo) _ (EDS: UPDATING WITH NINE MORE EXAMINEES ALLOWED TO RETAKE LISTENING TEST, OTHER INFO)
Problems with the integrated circuit players used for the English listening comprehension component of unified entrance exams for universities and colleges on Saturday forced 453 examinees to retake the listening test, organizers said Sunday.
The National Center for University Entrance Examinations said it will allow nine other examinees to retake a listening test next Saturday due mainly to examiners failing to conduct reexaminations in cases deemed necessary.
The center, an arm of the Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Ministry, made the announcements on the second day of the two-day exams.
There were 461 examinees subject to the second test conducted at the end of the first-day exams, and eight candidates chose not to retake the test, the center said.
A total of 492,596 people took the listening test, the center said.
The English listening test was carried out for the first time on Saturday in the unified exams as part of a bid to boost the ability of Japanese to communicate in the language.
On Sunday, exams on science and math were held, following those on civics, geography, history, Japanese and foreign languages given Saturday.
The government began organizing unified exams for national and local government-run universities and colleges in academic year 1979 and upgraded them in academic year 1990 so that private universities and colleges could use the exams.
