Japan's electricity supply hits record high for January
(Kyodo) _ The amount of electricity sold in January by Japan's 10 utilities hit a record high for the month due to cold weather across the nation, an industry body said Tuesday.
Electricity supply totaled 87.74 billion kilowatt-hours, up 4.1 percent from a year earlier, the Federation of Electric Power Companies of Japan said in a preliminary report.
The federation said this winter's cold air that engulfed almost the entire Japanese archipelago boosted the use of heating systems in homes and offices.
All 10 power companies marked all-time highs for their electricity supplies for January. Among them, two companies in the north --Hokkaido Electric Power Co. and Tohoku Electric Power Co. -- marked record highs for any single month, the federation said.
By company, power supplied by Hokuriku Electric Power Co. rose 6.7 percent from the previous year, while that supplied by Chubu Electric Power Co. and Tohoku increased 5.6 percent and 4.8 percent respectively.
