Obstetrician in Fukushima Pref. arrested over 2004 malpractice
(Kyodo) _ Police arrested an obstetrician at a general hospital in Fukushima Prefecture on Saturday over a 2004 cesarean operation that caused the death of the 29-year-old woman who underwent the procedure.
The doctor, 38-year-old Katsuhiko Kato, was arrested on suspicion of professional negligence resulting in death, and for violating the Medical Practitioners Law by failing to report the woman's death to police, the police said.
According to the investigators, Kato performed a cesarean section on the woman at Ono Hospital in December 2004 despite knowing that the operation could cause massive bleeding because of her having a condition known as placenta accreta, or an abnormally firm attachment of the placenta to the uterine wall.
The woman from the town of Naraha in the prefecture died of severe bleeding after Kato removed the placenta from the uterine wall, they said.
The Fukushima prefectural government, which runs the hospital in the town of Okuma, publicized her death as a case of malpractice in March 2005 and offered an apology to the bereaved family. The local government punished Kato with a pay cut.
Police did not know of the case before the malpractice was made public by the prefectural government. They raided the hospital in April 2005 and prefectural government offices on Saturday.
Kato is the only obstetrician at the 150-bed hospital.
