Taiwan Franchise Industry to Get US$123 MLN in New Investment

TAIPEI, March 13 Asia Pulse - Taiwan's fast-expanding franchise industry is expected to be infused with NT$4 billion (US$123 million) in new investment this year and create more than 10,000 new job opportunities, according to a report released Saturday by the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA).

MOEA officials said the country's franchise industry is maturing fast and "performing brilliantly" following the introduction into the country of an American-style franchising system and the know-how of the Japanese distribution network, as well as the entry of new international restaurant chains.

As of last year, there were 1,424 franchises in Taiwan representing 180 different industries, with the number of stores totalling 91,637 and sales amounting to NT$1.5 trillion, MOEA statistics show.

The figure accounted for 44.22 per cent of the country's total sales in the retail and restaurant industries.

The officials said that to boost the development of the franchise industry, the MOEA will set up a "franchise industry service center" this year to provide professional consultation to franchise operators and implement a certification system to ensure quality service.

It is the MOEA's goal to increase the number of franchises with regional headquarters in Taiwan to 200 by 2010, they said.
