Japan Businesses Eye Vietnam's Sea Transport
HANOI, March 15 Asia Pulse - Three Japanese companies expect to receive licences to set up wholly foreign invested enterprises providing sea transport services for Vietnam's domestic market, according to the Vietnamese Ministry of Planning and Investment. The companies will deliver and receive goods, and provide warehouse services and business information. Many Japanese enterprises had hoped the Vietnamese Government would open sea transport services and permit wholly foreign invested enterprises in the sector, the ministry said. The decision 10/2001/ND-CP issued in 2001 stipulates that sea transport projects must be joint ventures, with a maximum foreign investment of 49 per cent of the total capital. However, recent WTO agreements between Vietnam and the EU have overruled the decision, and several exceptions already exist. Therefore, after the bilateral agreement between Vietnam and Japan signed late last year, Japanese companies can expect to receive the licences. (VNA)
