Comparing Philippines With Thailand a Show of Ignorance: Bunye
MANILA, April 6 Asia Pulse - The Presidential Office on Thursday said its critics are "ignorant" of the current system of government when they compared the situation in the Philippines to that of Thailand."Thailand is a good friend and ally of the Philippines. As a matter of policy, we would never comment on the internal political situation of another country," said Press Secretary and Presidential Spokesman Ignacio Bunye in a statement. However, Bunye said, there are those opponents in the Philippines "who dont observe such protocols and will grasp at any straw and look for any excuse to criticize our President and replay their weary refrain for the President to step down." "This time, they are trying to use the situation in Thailand to make their case. Critics show their deep ignorance of how our current system of government works when they compare it to the parliamentary system in place in Thailand," he stressed. Bunye said it is a sad reflection that the detractors of the President "have no clue how a parliamentary system of government works. No wonder they cant make a positive contribution to the debate on Charter change." "Once again, our critics are engaged in sweeping hypocrisy. On the one hand, they deny the will of the Philippine people for a change to a parliamentary form of government. On the other hand, they cite the Thai parliamentary situation as the perfect model to be emulated here at home," he said.
"They cannot have it both ways: support a parliamentary system when it suits their argument, deny it when it doesn't. That warped logic accurately sums up the opposition: They don't know whether they are coming or going," he added. Presidential Political Adviser Gabriel Claudio earlier said the situation of Philippine President Gloria Macapagal-Arroyo and that of Thaksin was altogether different. He said the country had "every momentum and every reason to move forward and look forward to better things ahead, which is not the situation in Thailand." Thaksin resigned on Tuesday following a meeting with Thailand's King Bhumibol Adulyadej. His replacement will be named when the Thai parliament resumes sessions within the next 30 days. Claudio said that prior to Thaksin's announcement, there was an environment of gloom and pessimism and a lot of outrage and anger. "Such is not the situation here in the Philippines. There are lots of positive development in the economic and the political front that should make the Filipinos feel optimistic and hopeful," he said. Claudio said Filipinos are tired of political bickering and confrontation, that is why, despite the relentless agitation by the opposition, there is no upheaval against the President or the government.
