Japan to pay over $26 billion for overall U.S. military shuffle
(Kyodo) _ Japan is estimated to pay more than $26 billion to help implement the overall U.S. military realignment in Japan over six to seven years, far bigger than the U.S. share of only $4 billion, a senior U.S. defense official said Tuesday.
U.S. Deputy Defense Undersecretary for Asia and Pacific Affairs Richard Lawless unveiled the estimates at a press conference, defending the compromise deal struck Sunday with Japan on sharing the cost to relocate 8,000 Marine Corps troops from Okinawa to Guam.
"The only cost to the United States is $4 billion on Guam," Lawless said. Japan will pay more than $20 billion estimated for realignment within Japan, including the relocation of the Marine's Futemma Air Station in Okinawa, on top of the $6 billion Guam share, he added.
