Olympics: Tokyo enters race for 2016 Summer Olympics

(Kyodo) _ Tokyo presented its formal proposal Friday to the Japanese Olympic Committee in a bid to host the 2016 Summer Olympics.

Tokyo threw its hat into the ring just four days after the city of Fukuoka made a proposal to the JOC of its intention to host the 2016 Summer Games.

Friday was the deadline for cities wishing to draw a bid.

Tokyo will aim to host the games for the first time since the 1964 Summer Olympics.

According to the plan, most of the sporting venues would be concentrated within a 10-kilometer radius of the city with the main stadium to be constructed at Harumi Pier near Tokyo's Rainbow Bridge.

The candidates to host the games can present the outlines of their plans until the end of June before the final selection for the representative from Japan is made in a JOC vote on Aug. 30.
