Filmers of 'The Promise' criticized for defacing environment

(Kyodo) _ Chinese director Chen Kaige's high-budget epic "The Promise" has come under criticism for harming the environment in Yunnan where the movie was partly filmed, official media reported Wednesday.

The China Daily and others media carried remarks by Qiu Baoxing, vice minister of construction, that the martial arts extravaganza's production team left a large volume of trash in the scenic Bigu Lake in northern Yunnan Province the crew was doing the location there in 2004.

Speaking to an international symposium held in Hangzhou on environmental conservation, Qiu reportedly said the production team seriously polluted the area with garbage, wine bottles, plastic bags and raincoats during the making of the film.

The team also built a road that damaged the vegetation and left many useless structures and installations which are inharmonious with the environment.

Among them was a 13-meter-tall structure with a 46-meter roof beam in a steel frame, which had to be abandoned amid the filming when it was found to be a safety hazard, and a dilapidated wooden bridge that now crosses the lake breaks it into two parts.

"The Promise" became a box-office hit when it debuted in China in mid-December last year and went on to be nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Foreign Language Film.

The movie is set in China's mythical past. It is a tale of passion that unfolds against a backdrop of war as a beautiful princess becomes the object of affection for three very different men -- a powerful duke, a brave general and a slave --- whose egos clash.

Japanese actor Hiroyuki Sanada plays the mighty Gen. Guangming in the film, which also stars Nicholas Tse, Cecilia Cheung, Jang Dong-kun and Liu Ye. Chen also directed Golden Globe winner "Farewell, My Concubine."
