Emperor, empress attend annual tree-planting ceremony
(Kyodo) _ An annual tree-planting ceremony took place Sunday in Gero, Gifu Prefecture, with Emperor Akihito and Empress Michiko taking part.
"With this as a turning point, I hope further people cooperate in creating and maintaining forests," the emperor said at the opening of the ceremony, the 57th of its kind, stressing the importance of young people's participation.
As is customary, the emperor and empress each planted nursery stocks of five kinds of trees.
