Abe seeks India's cooperation on N. Korea's abductions
(Kyodo) _ Chief Cabinet Secretary Shinzo Abe on Friday sought cooperation from India, which has diplomatic relations with North Korea, over the issue of Pyongyang's abduction of Japanese nationals, Japanese officials said.
Visiting Indian Defense Minister Pranab Mukherjee responded to Abe in their meeting in Tokyo by saying that India will provide the maximum possible cooperation although there is a limit to its diplomatic ties with North Korea, the officials said.
In their talks, the top Japanese government spokesman explained that it is necessary to put pressure on the North over the abduction issue based on international consensus and that Japan will take up the matter in the U.N. Human Rights Council, they said.
Japan is demanding that North Korea provide concrete evidence of the fates of Japanese abductees, return any abductees still in the country and hand over the agents involved in the abductions.
Mukherjee also met separately with Japanese Foreign Minister Taro Aso to discuss bilateral issues, such as promoting political, economic and defense cooperation, as well as nuclear nonproliferation, the officials said.
