Thursday June 1, 7:50 PMNew Star Alliance wing to open at Narita airport on Friday
The South Wing of Terminal One, which has been recently built at a cost of 70 billion yen (622 million dollars), will Friday provide a new home for 10 members of the group, led by Japan's All Nippon Airways (ANA). Among others carriers are Air Canada, Asiana Airlines, Austrian, Lufthansa, Scandinavian Airlines, SWISS, Singapore Airlines, THAI and United, with Air New Zealand expected to join later. The 10 airline companies are to offer more than 790 weekly flights from the terminal at Narita, the gateway to Japan's capital, to 30 destinations in 15 countries. Under the plan, dubbed the "one roof" strategy, member carriers will share a check-in area on the departure floor, which will be divided according to class of travel rather than airline. They will also share a baggage screening system and departure lounges, while minimum connection times can be reduced from 110 minutes to 45 minutes for international flights, the group said. "This is the first co-location at a major airport facility in Asia, but was certainly not to be the last," Jaan Albrecht, chief executive of Star Alliance, told a joint news conference with the heads of the member carriers. "We are working with carriers and airport authorities in other Asian cities who recognize the value of the initiative," Albrecht said. Star Alliance plans to open similar co-location projects in Bangkok later this year as well as in London-Heathrow, Los Angeles, Madrid, Miami and Paris. |
