Emperor expresses sorrow for those died in S.E. Asia during WWII
(Kyodo) _ Japanese Emperor Akihito expressed sorrow Tuesday for those who died in Southeast Asia during World War II, ahead of his weeklong trip to Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand beginning Thursday.
"Many people, including Japanese, lost their lives (in Southeast Asia), and that is heartbreaking," said the 72-year-old emperor at a news conference.
The emperor said it is important for people in each country to keep history in mind and to cooperate in creating a world without fighting.
Empress Michiko, 71, will accompany the emperor on the trip.
The imperial couple's visit to Thailand and Malaysia is their second since the emperor ascended the throne in 1989, and it is their first visit to Singapore, which marks the 40th anniversary of its national foundation and normalization of diplomatic relations with Japan this year.
The emperor said it is important to establish friendly relations with these countries based on a full understanding of history.
The news conference was delayed from last week because the empress had a cold and cold sores.
In June last year, the imperial couple visited Saipan to offer condolences for those who died in the war there.
The imperial couple are scheduled to return home June 15.
