World Cup 'widows' gear up to brave soccer season in Singapore

SINGAPORE : World Cup fever is in the air and while it is a joyous occasion for the guys, their better halves are resigned to their fate.

The competition starts Friday night, and goes on for a month.

Twenty-seven-year old Charlene Ling, a financial advisor, is a self-proclaimed World Cup widow.

But she is going ahead with her customary Chinese wedding and month-long honeymoon to the United States with her soccer-mad husband, 26-year-old Joseph Lin.

Charlene said, "(A) honeymoon is...once in a lifetime...World Cup still happens once in four years. I will make sure he commits himself to the honeymoon instead of the World Cup."

However, their wedding dinner on June 24 will not have a live broadcast of the match, possibly between England and Germany.

Joseph said, "As long as it is not an England game, they will stick around. If it is I'm afraid they will leave at 10.45 pm."

And Joseph, a financial advisor too, plans to watch the games while on honeymoon, and has already told his wife he is not to be disturbed.

In response, Charlene says to him, "...you're going to to spend $10k going to (the) US to watch soccer?...Honeymoon is very important. Too much football is bad for you!"

Though not all wives will be as lucky as Charlene, there will be activities back home to keep other "soccer widows" occupied.

The Great Singapore Sale is one, and the Singapore Arts Festival could not have come at a better time.

Banyan Tree Hotels and Resorts is offering a "World Cup Escape" programme for long suffering "soccer widows."

They are promising massages, cooking classes and fine Thai cuisine for guests who sign up for the package at resorts in Bintan, Phuket and the Maldives. - CNA/ms
