Gist of N. Korea sanctions bill
(Kyodo) _ The law on human rights in North Korea calls on the government to:
-- do whatever it can to resolve the abduction issue.
-- conduct a thorough probe to confirm the fate of Japanese abductees in order to realize their return to Japan, and try to get to the bottom of the abduction incident.
-- take necessary measures under a law to ban port calls by North Korean ships and the foreign exchange law after considering the international situation comprehensively if no improvement is seen in the human rights situation in North Korea.
-- designate Dec. 10-16 as a campaign week on North Korea's human rights abuses.
-- submit reports annually to the Diet on its actions over North Korea's human rights abuses.
-- seek to support those North Koreans who fled the country and are regarded as being in need of protection and support from a humanitarian viewpoint.
-- try to supply information and financial support to NGOs helping North Korean defectors.
