Japanese man to kayak from Taiwan to Japanese island

(Kyodo) _ A young Japanese man embarked on a sea kayak adventure from Hualien in eastern Taiwan on Monday, planning to make his own history by paddling across the 300 kilometers of sea to his home on Ishigaki Island in Japan's southwestern island prefecture of Okinawa.

"This is my first time to traverse the waters in this area by kayak," Tokyo-born Satoru Yahata, 31, said. "I want to traverse the sea on my own like people did in the past."

Four years ago, Yahata underwent similar challenges in the waters between Australia and Indonesia, which greatly boosted his courage and confidence.

He then successfully completed a kayak tour to navigate the 500 km between Iriomote and Okinawa islands, both in Okinawa Prefecture, last year.

Traveling with his 5.5-meter-long kayak fully loaded with food and drinking water, Yahata will brave the Black Current, the biggest challenge during the journey, paddle northward along Yonaguni Island and then Iriomote and arrive at his destination Thursday.

"I think I shall be able to survive the Kuroshio," Yahata said. "It is fun to travel freely on the ocean, but you have to depend all on your own while on the sea."

"I hope I can reach the final destination safe and have some good beer," he added.
