Japanese, South, North Korean children show amity through drawings
(Kyodo) _ A weeklong exhibit of self-portraits and other drawings by children in North Korea, South Korea and Japan began Thursday in Tokyo to promote reciprocal knowledge and mutual friendship.
The free exhibit is to run until July 5, displaying some 380 drawings by elementary and middle school students in the three countries, including Korean children living in Japan.
Ten nongovernmental organizations are organizing the event.
The colorful drawings depict children's lives at school or with family and carry messages expressing their amity to one another.
"Do you make snowmen in Japan?" a North Korean third-grader asks in one message. "Let's make one together."
"I hope North Korea soon unites and want to play soccer together," says a South Korean sixth-grader's message. A Japanese elementary school student's message says, "I want to draw pictures with children in Seoul and Pyongyang."
On Sunday, about 10 children from South Korea plan to visit Japan for an event to play games with Japanese children.
The annual exhibit is the sixth of its kind and the next venue will be Pyongyang, in August next year.
