Crown prince plays viola at Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 performance
(Kyodo) _ Crown Prince Naruhito played the viola during a performance of Ludwig van Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 on Sunday at a concert given by an orchestra formed of alumni of his alma mater Gakushuin University in the university hall in Tokyo.
Crown Princess Masako attended the event, at which internationally acclaimed Japanese conductor Hiroyuki Iwaki, who passed away in June, was originally scheduled to wield the baton.
The prince also played the viola during a performance of another musical piece which the orchestra played in memory of the conductor, who died of heart failure.
