Thai Rock Stars to Give New Yorkers Opera
An award-winning artist has teamed up with Thai rock stars to perform Thailand's best rock 'n' roll, traditional folk tales, art and dance in New York.
Rockers Sek Loso, Noi Pru and the band Modern Dog, led by artistic director Rirkrit Tiravanija, will play demons, monkey gods, a princess and a warrior king in three performances of "The Ramakien: A Rak Opera." Rak is the Thai word for love.
The "Ramakien" is the Thai version of the "Ramayana," a 2,000-year-old epic story from India.
The performance will focus on a section of the "Ramakien" called the "Floating Princess," in which the demon king Totsakan has kidnapped Princess Sita. The king's troops and the monkey army of Hanuman, try to get Sita back.
The performance will also feature a Thai classical mask dance and orchestral music played with traditional instruments.
Rirkrit, winner of the Guggenheim Museum's 2004 Hugo Boss prize for his contribution to contemporary art, has shown his work at museums and galleries around the world including the Guggenheim in New York, London's Serpentine Gallery, the Yokohama Museum in Japan and the Oslo Kunsthalle in Norway.
Other musicians performing in the show include Thailand's Palmy and Brazilian-born singer Arto Lindsay.
The shows will be held July 28-30 at the LaGuardia Concert Hall at Lincoln Center.
