Princess Kiko has symptoms of placenta displacement
(Kyodo) _ Princess Kiko, whose baby is due in late September at the earliest, has symptoms of placenta previa, a complication in which the placenta becomes implanted at a location lower than normal in the uterus, the Imperial Household Agency said Tuesday.
The 39-year-old princess is the wife of Prince Akishino, the younger brother of Crown Prince Naruhito. The princes are the sons of Emperor Akihito.
The sex of the expected baby is a focus of attention as the imperial family has not seen the birth of a male heir for more than 40 years. The Imperial House Law allows only male heirs to succeed to the throne.
