Overseas Filipino Workers Being Moved Out of Lebanon

MANILA, July 20 Asia Pulse - Some 225 Overseas Filipino Workers (OFWs) caught in the middle of armed conflict in Lebanon are being moved out of that country for Damascus, Syria Thursday morning, the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) said.

DFA spokesperson Gilbert Asuque, in an interview aired over a local cable channel, said three buses have been hired by Philippine Embassy authorities to transport the Filipinos out of the war-ravaged country.

He said the OFWs are those who sought sanctuary at the Our Lady of Miraculous Medallion Church in Beirut, headed by Filipino priest Fr. Agustin Advincula.

From Damascus, the OFWs will be airlifted to Dubai, United Arab Emirates (UAE) before they are sent back to the Philippines, he said.

Asuque said another batch of Filipino evacuees will be transported once the first batch has been safely brought out of Lebanon.

He said some 30,000 Filipinos are in Lebanon and most of them are concentrated in Beirut.
