Jackie Chan to open coffee shop franchise in Manila

(Kyodo) _ Hong Kong and Hollywood action star Jackie Chan took a break from filming martial arts movies and dropped by Manila on Friday to announce plans to open a coffee franchise here.

Chan, known for his string of successful movies like the "Drunken Master" and "Rush Hour," signed a deal with Filipino investors to open a coffee shop in three months' time that will sell his "Jackie Chan's Java Coffee" brand.

He said he envisions building a coffee retail chain in China, Hong Kong, Singapore and the Philippines that will rival Starbucks Coffee Co. of the United States.

The 56-year-old actor said a portion of the profits would go to charities to buy books and build schools across Asia, recalling how he grew up poor in China with the Red Cross providing him food and clothing.

Chan said coffee, like music and movies, knows no barriers.

"Coffee is also a language in itself. When you watch my movies, you think of Jackie Chan. When you drink coffee, I hope you will also think Jackie Chan," the actor said.

Chan arrived in Manila on a chartered private jet after his commercial flight from Hong Kong was cancelled due to typhoon Prapiroon. He was scheduled to return to Hong Kong on Friday night to catch a flight to Paris, where he will film the third part of the "Rush Hour" series.
