KDDI to tie up with JCB on credit card phone-paper
TOKYO, Aug 23 (Reuters) - KDDI Corp. , Japan's
second-largest mobile phone operator, will tie up with credit
card issuer JCB Co. to offer cell phones that can be used as
credit cards, aiming to counter a service by rival NTT DoCoMo
Inc. , a newspaper reported on Wednesday.
Japan's mobile carriers are trying to roll out new services
and handsets before Oct. 24, when mobile phone users will be able
to keep their phone numbers when switching providers.
KDDI plans to launch new models equipped with JCB's payment
settlement software as early as this autumn, business daily Nihon
Keizai said. A KDDI spokesman could not immediately confirm the
report.
KDDI, unlisted JCB and other companies formed an alliance
last year to promote a standard that would allow use of mobile
phones in lieu of credit cards regardless of the issuer, aiming
to set up an structure to encourage use of the system.
