Wanted N. Korean agent has violinist brother

(Kyodo) _ A female North Korean agent wanted for allegedly abducting Hitomi Soga to North Korea in 1978 told Soga she has a violinist brother who has entered international competitions, sources close to the case said Friday.

Police obtained an arrest warrant for the agent, who goes by the name of Kim Myong Suk (phonetic), after determining her identity based on the information that her brother had won fourth place in the International Tchaikovsky Competition in Moscow in 1978, the sources said.

Kim, believed to be in her 70s or 80s and currently living in North Korea, lived with the then 19-year-old Soga for about four months as a caretaker and guard in North Korea after abducting her from Niigata Prefecture, according to the sources.

The police suspect the agent also served as a caretaker for Megumi Yokota, who was abducted at age 13 from the same prefecture in 1977.

Soga told Yokota's parents after she was repatriated in 2002 that she lived with their daughter for nearly two years in Pyongyang and celebrated her 14th birthday together in October 1978.

Another North Korean agent, Sin Guang Su, 77, who is wanted for the abduction of Japanese nationals in 1978 and 1980, is also known as having served as an educator for Soga and Yokota.

North Korea admitted in 2002 to having abducted 13 Japanese nationals and claimed the remaining eight had died.

Japan has recognized 16 Japanese in 11 cases as having been kidnapped by North Korea. Kim is the sixth person on the wanted list in connection with North Korea's abductions of Japanese citizens.
