Korean students, schools attacked over N. Korea's nuke test, missiles

(Kyodo) _ A total of 171 cases of verbal or physical attacks directed at Korean schools and their students have been reported across Japan since North Korea test-fired ballistic missiles on July 5, a pro-Pyongyang group said Tuesday.

The General Association of Korean Residents in Japan, known as Chongryon, said that Korean schools have reported 120 cases of such attacks from July to Oct. 2 and another 51 cases since Oct. 3, when North Korea announced it would conduct a nuclear test.

Incidences of harassment include violence against students, an incident in which a school's musical instruments were dumped at its athletic field in Yamaguchi Prefecture, and another case in which a post on an online message board of a Tokyo school read, "Sanctions to nukes, eye for an eye."

North Korea launched a long-range Taepodong-2 missile believed to be capable of reaching the United States, along with six shorter-range missiles on July 5, and conducted an underground nuclear test on Oct. 9, sparking outrage among the Japanese public as well as the international community.
