NTU-Domus Academy partnership a milestone in design education: SM Goh
MILAN : A Singapore university has inked a deal with one of the world's top design academies in Italy to offer joint Masters programmes in Singapore. The Memorandum of Understanding between Nanyang Technological University and Domus Academy was signed on Saturday in Milan. It was a marriage three years in the making - a partnership Senior Minister Goh Chok Tong says "marks an important milestone in design education between a Singapore university and a leading foreign academy of design". Domus Academy's Master design programme is considered one of the top three in the world. In its ambition to expand internationally, it has chosen Singapore's Nanyang Technological University to be its first world-partner. For Singapore, the collaboration will produce the country's first such specialty design school and programme.
Maria Grazia Mazzocchi, President, Domus Academy, said: "We think that design in Singapore has the same roots that we may have had in Italy in the 50s. And we see that it is going up and from Singapore. And knowing that Singapore is a fantastic hub to Asia, it will spread out in all the countries which are now growing up so quickly. We think that many students also cannot afford the cost to stay one year in Italy. So we are bringing the Italian culture to those students who can easily come to Singapore to learn Italian design." Isaac Kerlow, Dean, School of Art, Design and Media, NTU, said: "What we like about Italian design is its holistic approach and this is the reason why we were attracted to doing a partnership with Domus. Because they don't break one challenge into local little pieces, they take a holistic approach which is very unique in Italian design." And that holistic approach means that Domus Academy students learn more than the creative aspect of design. They are also trained in understanding and dealing with the business side of a design enterprise. Each Masters programme will span three semesters, with students spending the second semester in Milan training with both lecturers and practitioners in design industries, affiliated with Domus Academy. Mr Kerlow said: "The most wonderful thing is they are also very excited to be in Singapore and the region because they realise that they need to open up to Southeast Asia. And I think that these are two partners who really need each other and want to work together." The inaugural course offered in this new partnership will be product design. The first intake of 20 students will start school next August. - CNA/ch
