Rush of year-end homecoming travelers peaks
(Kyodo) _ Airports and train stations were crowded Saturday nationwide as a "homecoming rush" of travelers spending the New Year's holiday season in their hometowns peaked.
Seats of airplanes departing Tokyo's Haneda airport and other airports in major cities were almost full.
JR Tokaido shinkansen bullet trains departing Tokyo were running at more than 100 percent capacity in their nonreserved sections, with one of them marking 190 percent at one point.
The occupancy ratios for nonreserved sections also came to around 100 percent for the Tohoku and Joetsu shinkansen trains.
Traffic on expressways, meanwhile, is relatively smooth partly because drivers tend to avoid the peak of the rush for fear of a long string of cars.
Only some traffic jams were observed in the morning, including a 16-kilometer congestion around the Okazaki interchange in Aichi Prefecture of the Tomei Expressway.
