Over 40 secondary schools offering Advanced Elective Modules in '07
SINGAPORE: More than 40 secondary schools will begin offering Advanced Elective Modules (AEMs) to their upper secondary students next year.Conducted by the five polytechnics, the AEMs are 40-hour courses, aimed at giving secondary students more choices in their learning options. Sentosa will become a classroom for students from St Hilda's, Loyang, Pasir Ris and Springfield Secondary in the coming year. Students in these schools which are offering the ‘Fundamentals of Hospitality and Tourism Business’ as an AEM can look forward to field trips to various tourism destinations to study the workings of this fast-growing industry. Choi Hoi San, Course Manager, Hospitality and Tourism, Temasek Polytechnic, says: "We'll cover things like tourism suppliers, which include accommodation, food and beverage, transportation, the tour planners, and how all these sectors work together to form the Hospitality and Tourism Industry. We will be talking about IRs, specifically under the topic of Hospitality and Tourism Business within Singapore, and we'll also talk about service which is very much part of Singapore." Other than business- and tourism-related modules, Engineering, Information Technology, Media and Design, and Chemical and Life Sciences modules will also be offered.
Singapore Polytechnic, for example, will offer a module on Game Design, while a course on Stem Cell and Tissue Engineering will be offered by Republic Polytechnic. The purpose of AEMs is to help students discover their strengths and interests early in their education, and to give them a taste of some of the courses they can take in the polytechnics. Although it does not directly impact the 'O' level scores, the AEMs may be considered for admission into polytechnics under the Direct Admissions Exercise. Altogether, 37 different modules will be offered by the polytechnics next year which is a three-fold increase from 2006. Each class will have 20 to 25 students, and the fees will be capped at S$55. - CNA/so
