Airbus to announce "major order" Monday -PR firm

PARIS, Jan 4 (Reuters) - European planemaker Airbus plans to announce a "major aircraft purchase" in London on Monday, its British public relations firm said on Thursday.

In an emailed invitation to a 1445 GMT news conference, Merlin PR did not identify the customer airline or specify the type or number of aircraft involved.

The Wall Street Journal reported this week that Malaysian airline AirAsia Bhd would order 100 Airbus single-aisle jetliners.

The news conference advisory came shortly after rival Boeing announced record orders for 2006.

Industry sources say Airbus is unlikely to catch up with Boeing's 1,044 net plane orders in 2006, or repeat its own record level of 1,111 Airbus orders in 2005, after a slump in wide-body sales during the redesign of its future A350.
