U.S. seeking N. Korea nuclear, finance talks next week: sources

(Kyodo) _ The United States and North Korea have proposed differing schedules for the resumption of the six-way nuclear talks, with Washington calling for talks on the nuclear issue and those on U.S. financial restrictions to be held at the same time and Pyongyang saying they should be separate, diplomatic sources said Wednesday.

According to the sources, Washington has proposed that the nuclear talks and the financial meeting both take place next week.

Pyongyang, meanwhile, is saying the financial discussions should be held next week, followed by the nuclear negotiations the week after that, according to the sources.

The two countries, meanwhile, are in basic agreement that the venue of the talks should be in Beijing.

Progress in the six-way nuclear talks aimed at ending the standoff over North Korea's nuclear programs has been blocked by a dispute over the U.S. financial restrictions against a Macao-based bank suspected of laundering money and circulating counterfeit money for North Korea.

While the six-way talks involve the two Koreas, the United States, China, Japan and Russia, the financial meeting brings together experts from the United States and North Korea to deal with the U.S. restrictions.

Faced with the conflicting proposals, China, the host of the six-way negotiations tasked with coordinating the date, has yet to propose a date for the resumption the talks to participating countries, the sources said.
