U.S. seeks UNFPA's comprehensive audit of N. Korea projects
(Kyodo) _ The United States on Wednesday urged the U.N Population Fund (UNFPA) to conduct a comprehensive audit of its programs in North Korea.
The move came after the 36-member executive board of the U.N. agency approved an $8.35 million aid program for North Korea, focusing mainly on reproductive health, population and development issues, for a three-year period from 2007.
The U.S. representative, expressing deep concerns over the humanitarian situation in North Korea, also called for the UNFPA to make all audits available to the executive board members.
Japan also sought close monitoring of implementation of the programs in order to ensure that "maximum benefits are delivered to the neediest individuals, in particular women and youth."
Responding to the statements from the United States and Japan, North Korea defended its compliance with the agency's monitoring processes and the access given to UNFPA country teams, saying the UNFPA regularly monitors project sites and has shown satisfaction.
The statements by the United States and Japan follow allegations that Pyongyang has misappropriated U.N. Development Program funds.
