Wrestling: Yoshida beats Sakamoto to win 5th straight title
(Kyodo) _ Athens Olympic gold medalist Saori Yoshida dominated Hitomi Sakamoto to win the final of the women's 55-kilogram class, claiming her fifth straight crown at the national championships on Sunday.
Yoshida outclassed the reigning world champion at 51 kg in nearly every aspect, tackling Sakamoto several times in the first period before finishing off her opponent for a convincing 2-0 win at Komazawa gymnasium. Yoshida extended her winning streak to 103.
In men's freestyle action, Kenichi Yumoto clinched his second consecutive title at 60 kg at the Tokyo meet, which doubles as a qualifier for the world championships in Azerbaijan in September.
Meanwhile, Norifumi "Kid" Yamamoto, who returned to wrestling after a seven-year absence, got through his first-round match with flying colors, lifting Akihiro Tsuchida onto his shoulder before slamming him to the mat for a comfortable win.
But Yamamoto, who became a successful K-1 mixed martial arts fighter while away from wrestling, got a reality check against Athens Olympic bronze medalist Kenji Inoue, who needed just 16 seconds to throw him to the mat with an arm technique in the quarterfinals.
Yamamoto remained on the mat for a spell writhing in pain and holding his right arm, which was dislocated at the elbow. He will require three to four weeks to fully recover.
In other freestyle action, Tomohiro Matsunaga won his third straight title at 55 kg.
Makoto Sasamoto took the men's Greco-roman 60 kg title for the seventh time in a row and was awarded the Emperor's Cup trophy after he was named MVP.
