Japanese comedian gets in trouble for revealing bottom in China
(Kyodo) _ A Japanese comedian who goes by the name "Ken" in the popular stand-up comedy duo "Tommys" has been given a stern warning from Chinese authorities for revealing his buttocks in front of tourists on China's Hainan Island, broadcasting officials said Thursday.
The 47-year-old comedian, whose real name is Ken Mitsuda, was shooting a scene for an entertainment program for Osaka-based Asahi Broadcasting Corp. when he took the action at Nanshan Temple, a popular Buddhist site, on the Chinese island on Monday, they said.
The comedian did so as a gag after gaining approval from a Chinese coordinator present there, the officials said. He and staff members were questioned by local police officials, deleted the scene from the recording and submitted a letter of apology the next day before returning to Japan on Wednesday, they said.
The program is set for broadcast on Feb. 24, but the broadcaster said it is still considering whether it should air the program.
"We sincerely regret that such a senseless deed took place," said a public relations official of Asahi Broadcasting. "We apologize to people on the island and keep our staff involved in the program informed so that this will never happen again."
A local newspaper in Hainan reported the incident in its Thursday edition.
Ken and his partner Masa, both Osaka natives, have been popular with their "manzai" comic dialogues.
