Cats, dogs from nations with minimal rabies risk to be quarantine-exempt

SINGAPORE: Cats and dogs from countries with minimal risk of rabies can soon be imported into Singapore without having to go through a 30-day quarantine.

This is provided they meet the Agri-Food & Veterinary Authority's other test and vaccination requirements.

Currently, only pets from 4 countries - United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand and Ireland - are exempt from quarantine.

The revised policy was announced by Minister of State for National Development Grace Fu when she opened a new $4.6m quarantine facility in Sembawang on Friday.

Ms Fu says the revision follows developments in international quarantine policies.

Singapore has been free of rabies since 1953.

Rabies is an infectious and often fatal viral disease of most warm-blooded animals, especially cats, dogs and wolves.

It attacks the central nervous system and is transmitted by the bite of infected animals. - CNA/ir
