Welfare minister gets Valentine chocolate in call for resignation
(Kyodo) _ "I love you who quits gracefully," a civic group wrote on a large Valentine chocolate presented Wednesday to welfare minister Hakuo Yanagisawa, who is under fire for controversial remarks in which he described women as "birth-giving machines."
The Tokyo-based Peace Boat said its members took two days to make the heart-shaped chocolate, which is 30 centimeters wide and 50 cm long and weighs 3.5 kilograms, or about the weight of a newborn baby.
About 20 female members of the group who are now raising children handed the chocolate to an official of the Health, Labor and Welfare Ministry along with a message which stated, "We declare along with the chocolate...resign as early as possible."
Yanagisawa has repeatedly apologized for the remarks during parliamentary deliberations, with opposition parties continuing to press for his resignation.
Prime Minister Shinzo Abe has said he will not bow to such pressure and will keep Yanagisawa.
