Sumo: Hakuho stays in front, head-to-head with Asashoryu on Saturday
(Kyodo) _ Mongolian ozeki Hakuho swatted down ozeki Chiyotaikai to stay in the lead with his 12th win with two days remaining at the Spring Grand Sumo Tournament on Friday.
Hakuho will meet yokozuna Asashoryu on the penultimate day after sumo's sole grand champion blasted out Bulgarian ozeki Kotooshu to stay one win behind Hakuho in the day's final bout.
Hakuho was clearly stiff and nervous against Chiyotaikai and delayed touching his hands to the line to begin the bout, causing Chiyotaikai to false start twice.
Chiyotaikai impatiently charged like a bull after the face-off, but Hakuho just simply let the ozeki fly forward and out of the ring to stay in the lead. Chiyotaikai dropped to 7-6.
Asashoryu, who is chasing his fifth consecutive title and 21st Emperor's Cup overall, never allowed Kotooshu to get a grip on his mawashi and socked the ozeki over the edge with several powerful shoves to the chest. Kotooshu slipped to 7-6.
Kaio moved one from a winning record, heaving out Kisenosato, who fell to a losing record for the second straight tournament.
Makuuchi debutant Tochiozan, meanwhile, was sent crashing to third defeat, falling to Russian rank-and-filer Roho, a former komusubi wrestler.
Roho (7-6) stunned Tochiozan with a smack to the face after the face-off before using a left-handed grip on the back of his opponent's belt to lift him over the edge and out of title contention.
Fifth-ranked maegashira Homasho (9-4) got a left-handed underhand grip on Kotomitsuki (8-5) immediately after the face-off and drove the sekiwake out in a matter of seconds in a fierce frontal attack.
Mongolian Tokitenku (7-6) grabbed crowd favorite Takamisakari (7-6) by the neck and walloped him with slaps across the face several times before dumping him to the dirt surface with a leg sweep.
Wakanosato, a former sekiwake who has returned to the top flight after a brief stint in the second-tier juryo division, dragged down Aminishiki (8-5) to pick up a ninth win.
