Osaka cancels resident registrations of 2,100 slum dwellers

(Kyodo) _ The Osaka city government said Thursday it has cancelled bogus resident registrations by about 2,100 homeless people and day laborers in the city's Airin area, one of Japan's largest slums.

The homeless people and day laborers had recently submitted resident registrations listing the addresses of three offices run by their supporters but the municipal government canceled the registrations as they were not actually living there.

The local government decided to cancel the registrations as allowing them to vote in the Osaka prefectural and city assembly elections in April could have resulted in the elections being nullified because they are not residents and are not entitled to vote, city officials said.

The Airin area in Osaka's Nishinari Ward is one of Japan's three largest slums, along with the Sanya area in Tokyo and Yokohama's Kotobukicho area.

The issue of bogus resident registrations in the Airin area emerged last December when around 3,300 homeless people and day laborers were found to have registered as their residence a narrow plot of land where an office of their supporters is located.

Currently, around 2,100 homeless people and day laborers have registered as their residence one of three offices in the Airin area run by their supporters, down from about 3,700 as of last October, the officials said.
