JTB expects 0.4% fewer people to go abroad during Golden Week
(Kyodo) _ An estimated 548,000 people are expected to go abroad from Japan for overnight or longer stays during the coming Golden Week holiday season, down 0.4 percent from a year earlier as this year's string of public holidays is not conducive to long trips, JTB Corp. said Thursday.
The number of travelers to Asian destinations is likely to increase 4.4 percent to 308,000 between April 25 and May 5 as the distribution of holidays hardly affects three- to four-day tours which are popular with people visiting Asia, the biggest Japanese travel agency said.
But JTB forecasts a 7.4 percent fall in the number of tourists bound for North America to 126,000.
In addition, the number of visitors to Europe and Oceania is likely to decrease 2.4 percent and 8.9 percent, respectively, to 80,000 and 25,500, JTB said.
JTB made the projections based on replies to its March survey from 1,200 people as well as ticket sales at its outlets and flight reservations placed with airlines. The travel agency began the survey in 1969.
The number of people traveling in Japan during the holiday season is expected to increase a marginal 0.1 percent to 21.49 million, JTB said.
Altogether, some 22.04 million people are forecast to travel either in Japan or abroad, up 0.1 percent.
Travelers in Japan and abroad are expected to increase spending by 0.3 percent to 978.1 billion yen -- 137.9 billion yen abroad, up 0.1 percent, and 840.2 billion yen in Japan, up 0.4 percent, JTB said.
This year's Golden Weak has two workdays before the streak of last four holidays.
