LEAD: Baseball: Jojima's grand slam lifts Mariners over Royals
(Kyodo) _ (EDS: UPDATING)
Kenji Jojima hit the first grand slam of his major league career and Ichiro Suzuki extended his hitting streak to 19 games as the Seattle Mariners routed the Kansas City Royals 9-1 on Saturday.
Jojima gave the Mariners a 4-1 lead in the fourth inning when he connected off Brian Bannister with one out and the bases loaded for his seventh home run of the season, the most on the team.
"When I'm at the plate in a situation like that, I try to think this at-bat is for me," Jojima said.
"With the bases loaded, it would've been a double play if I hit a grounder, so it was pressure for a slow-running guy like me," he said.
In his other at-bats, Jojima singled to center in the second and grounded out twice.
Suzuki sparked a five-run ninth with an RBI single to second after having two flyouts and two groundouts, once into a double play, earlier in the game at Kauffman Stadium.
Elsewhere, Hideki Matsui went 1-for-3 with a walk in the New York Yankees' 3-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels.
Toronto Blue Jays right-hander Tomokazu Ohka got a no-decision after giving up three runs and eight hits in seven innings against the Minnesota Twins. The Blue Jays won 9-8 in 13 innings.
Texas Rangers reliever Akinori Otsuka worked a scoreless ninth in a 7-4 loss to the Boston Red Sox.
Colorado Rockies second baseman Kazuo Matsui went hitless in four at-bats in a 6-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants.
So Taguchi came in as a defensive replacement in right field in the ninth and did not have a plate appearance in the St. Louis Cardinals' 8-6 win over the Washington Nationals.
