Mercury hits 36.1 C in Oita Pref.

(Kyodo) _ The mercury soared to 36.1 C in Inukai, Oita Prefecture, on Sunday, while temperatures hit record highs for May in other parts of the Japanese archipelago from Okinawa to Kanagawa prefectures, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.

Inukai became the first location to experience an "extremely hot day," a new category introduced by the agency in April to describe a day when the mercury tops 35 C.

The previous highest May temperature in Inukai was 33.2 C marked on May 26, 1991.

Other locations where temperatures broke May records included Odawara in Kanagawa Prefecture, Kumano in Mie Prefecture, Misho in Ehime Prefecture, Sukumo in Kochi Prefecture, Shibushi in Kagoshima Prefecture and Kumejima in Okinawa Prefecture.

Warm air has streamed across the archipelago from the south since Saturday, the agency added.
