LEAD: Mercury hits 36.1 C in Oita, Miyazaki
(Kyodo) _ (EDS: ADDING INFO)
The mercury topped 35 C in Bungoono, Oita Prefecture, and the city of Miyazaki on Sunday, while temperatures hit record highs for May at 24 locations in 10 prefectures, the Japan Meteorological Agency said.
Bungoono, which marked the maximum temperature of 36.1 C, and Miyazaki, in which the mercury soared to 35.4 C, became the first locations to experience an "extremely hot day," a new category introduced by the agency in April to describe a day when the mercury tops 35 C.
Other locations where temperatures broke May records included Odawara in Kanagawa Prefecture, Misho in Ehime Prefecture and Kumejima in Okinawa Prefecture.
Warm air has streamed across the archipelago from the south since Saturday, the agency added.
