Poll predicts Australia's Howard will lose seat in election
(Kyodo) _ Australia's Prime Minister John Howard and 12 of his ministers are facing the humiliation of possibly losing their seats in this year's federal election, a polling analysis published Monday shows.
The state-by-state analysis of the past six months of poll results, published in Fairfax newspapers, shows the coalition government is facing a disastrous result if its performance persists.
The analysis shows the coalition losing more than half its seats -- 46 of 87 -- in the election slated for November.
Howard's electoral seat, as well as that of his right-hand man Treasurer Peter Costello and up-and-coming Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull would all be lost in a predicted landslide by the opposition Australian Labor Party.
The analysis shows a two-party preferred vote of 57 percent for Labor and 43 percent for the coalition, a nationwide swing of 9.8 points to Labor.
Labor leader Kevin Rudd, who is considered to be more conservative than many of his party's former leaders, has enjoyed a sustained period of popularity since taking the leadership in December.
Last week, Howard warned his coalition members that the 11-year government is facing "annihilation" at the voting booths, naming the longevity of his and Costello's leadership as one of their greatest obstacles.
Howard faces a tough fight in his own local seat, according to the analysis.
Labor has nominated high-profile, former television journalist Maxine McKew to challenge Howard.
