Baseball: Ichiro extends hitting streak to 20 games
(Kyodo) _ Seattle Mariners leadoff man Ichiro Suzuki delivered a pair of singles to stretch his hitting streak to 20 games Sunday, coming within three of the longest streak of his career.
Suzuki hit an RBI single to right field in the sixth inning and added a single to left in the ninth in a 2-for-4 outing, helping Seattle to beat the Kansas City Royals 7-4. The outfielder raised his batting average to .339.
"I just reached this threshold in my streak and that's what I feel good about," said Suzuki, whose personal longest hitting streak is 23 games set in 1994 in Japan and also in 2001 in the majors.
Suzuki has hit safely for 20 and more consecutive games six times in the majors.
"Have I done it that many times? That's surprising, really," Suzuki said when he was told of his hitting streaks. "Rather than thinking about my streaks, I'm concerned more about the fact that my memories aren't very clear," he quipped.
Seattle catcher Kenji Jojima took the day off.
Elsewhere, rookie left-hander Hideki Okajima earned his third save after working the ninth inning of the Boston Red Sox's 6-5 win over the Texas Rangers. Okajima took the mound with Boston leading 6-4 and gave up a run on two hits.
Texas reliever Akinori Otsuka (1-1) took his first loss of the season, yielding two runs and three hits in one inning to allow Boston to take a 5-4 lead after eight innings.
Tadahito Iguchi turned in his first multihit performance in six games on a 2-for-4 day, including two singles and a walk, but the Chicago White Sox fell 11-5 to the Tampa Bay Devil Rays.
Hideki Matsui of the New York Yankees was held hitless in four at-bats in a 4-3 loss to the Los Angeles Angels.
St. Louis Cardinals outfielder So Taguchi batted leadoff and played center field against the Washington Nationals and finished 1-for-4 with a single. The Nationals won 7-2.
Colorado Rockies infielder Kazuo Matsui appeared as a pinch-runner and scored the go-ahead run in the top of the 10th inning in a 6-4 win against the San Francisco Giants.
