3RD LD: Crown Prince Naruhito undergoes surgery to remove benign polyp

(Kyodo) _ (EDS: ADDING INFO)

Japan's Crown Prince Naruhito underwent endoscopic surgery Wednesday at a Tokyo hospital to remove a benign duodenal polyp and returned to his room there after about two hours.

"The surgery was successful," Ichiro Kanazawa, the Imperial Household Agency's medical supervisor, told a press conference.

The 47-year-old crown prince is expected to stay at the University of Tokyo Hospital for about a week and to rest at his residence in Tokyo for another week or so after his discharge, the agency said.

The agency said the polyp is benign but is a rare kind in the duodenum that requires more caution, especially over the possibility of bleeding, and post-surgical care than the type that develops in the stomach or large intestine.

The polyp was surgically removed before it developed into a malignancy.

The operation, which involved very little bleeding, began at 10:10 a.m. and ended about 70 minutes later, according to the agency. The prince returned to his hospital room shortly past noon, exchanged words with Crown Princess Masako and appears to be in good shape, the agency said.

The polyp was discovered when the crown prince and princess underwent a periodic health checkup in March.
