Japan Post picks NTT Data, Hitachi for bank system
TOKYO, June 12 (Reuters) - Japan Post [JP.UL] has awarded a
consortium including NTT Data Corp. and Hitachi Ltd.
a $181 million deal to supply the core computer system
to Yucho Bank, which will be created through the October
privatisation of the postal organisation.
Yucho means "postal savings" in Japanese.
The consortium's 22 billion yen bid compared favourably with
a competing 32.55 billion yen bid from the Japan unit of
International Business Machines Corp. , said Japan Post,
which runs the world's largest savings bank and has some $3
trillion in assets.
Japan Post said on Tuesday the consortium's bid was far lower
than what it had expected, and it decided to pick the winner only
after reexamining the proposals from the NTT Data-led group.
An NTT Data spokeswoman said the project would not make a
loss.
The system proposed by the consortium is based on a computer
system originally developed for the former UFJ Bank.
