Tuesday June 12, 5:02 PMLEAD: Crown prince released from hospital after polyp-removal surgery(Kyodo) _ (EDS: ADDING CROWN PRINCE'S STATEMENT, OTHER INFO)Crown Prince Naruhito, who underwent endoscopic surgery to remove a benign duodenal polyp last week, was released from hospital and returned to his residence in Tokyo on Tuesday. The 47-year-old crown prince remains in good condition, with the Imperial Household Agency saying, "A pathological check has shown that the removed polyp contained nothing malignant and it has been removed completely." The crown prince appeared at the entrance of the University of Tokyo Hospital in the afternoon wearing an blazer and holding flowers given to him by a nurse. Crown Princess Masako was with him. The crown prince got into a car after thanking Hirokazu Nagawa, the surgeon who performed the operation, and other hospital staff. "You did it very well," he said. "I realized again the importance of health," Crown Prince Naruhito said in a statement. "I was reminded of the hardships that those who remain hospitalized or who have been receiving treatment for a long time due to illness or injuries are going through," he said. The crown prince, Emperor Akihito's eldest son and first in line to the imperial throne, was hospitalized June 5 and underwent surgery the following day. He was kept on intravenous drips until Friday and then began having rice porridge, according to palace officials. The crown prince, who has no plans to visit the hospital as an outpatient, is expected to rest for another week at his residence while taking a drug designed to suppress stomach acid. He will be able to do some exercises, including light jogging, later on but must refrain from drinking alcohol for about one and a half months, they said. |
