Toyota expands incentives on Tundra pickup truck
(Kyodo) _ Toyota Motor Corp. has expanded incentives on its new Tundra pickup truck to take a greater share in the full-size U.S. pickup truck market, Toyota officials said Monday.
Toyota is offering buyers rebates of $3,500, up from the previous $2,000, for all models of the 2007 Tundra, the officials said.
Backed by strong compact car sales, the top Japanese automaker is expected to become the world's No. 1 car seller as early as in 2007, surpassing General Motors Corp.
But the latest step shows Toyota is struggling in the full-size pickup truck segment, which has been dominated by its U.S. rivals -- GM, Ford Motor Co. and the Chrysler division of DaimlerChrysler AG.
Toyota launched the new Tundra in February, targeting annual sales of it at 200,000 units. But its sales until May totaled some 61,000 units.
