SINGAPORE: The Wheelock College Centre for International Education, Leadership and Innovation has opened at the Ngee Ann Polytechnic. It will be offering the Bachelor of Science in Early Childhood Educational Studies and Leadership. This is the first-ever full-time degree course in early childhood education in Singapore. The centre is a collaborative project between the Boston-based Wheelock College, Ngee Ann Polytechnic and the Regional Training and Resource Centre in Early Childhood Care and Education for Asia. The first batch of 61 students will start their classes on 25 June. They will be able to conduct research projects at the Caterpillar's Cove Child Development and Study Centre, which is operated by the NTUC Childcare Group and built at a cost of S$1 million.
The centre is also located at the Ngee Ann Polytechnic. The students will undergo a four-week summer immersion programme in Wheelock College's Boston campus. The programme is endorsed by the Education Ministry's Foreign Specialised Institutions Degree Tie-Up Initiative. This means that students who are Singapore citizens or Singapore permanent residents can apply for a tuition grant and pay only S$6,800 a year for their tuition fees. Foreign students will have to pay the full tuition fee of S$23,500. - CNA/so
