(Kyodo) _ (EDS: FIXING NAME'S TYPO AT 5TH GRAF)
A 21-year-old Japanese, Mayuko Kamio, from Osaka Prefecture, won the violin section of the prestigious International Tchaikovsky Competition on Friday.
Kamio became the second Japanese to win the violin section, following Akiko Suwanai, who won the ninth competition in 1990 at age 18.
Kamio is from Toyonaka and participated in the 13th competition.
Kamio began studying violin at age 4 and made her debut at age 10 with a symphony orchestra conducted by Charles Dutoit. She has worked with major orchestras in and outside Japan since.
Kamio apprenticed with Japanese violinist Koichiro Harada and American violinist Dorothy DeLay of the Juilliard School in New York. After graduating from Toho Gakuen high school, Kamio has studied with violinist Zakhar Bron in Switzerland.
With Kamio, the number of overall Japanese winners at the competition came to total four, including those who won non-violin sections.
Named after the Russian composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky, the event is one of the most authoritative classical music competitions in the world that enables many young musicians to launch their successful career.
The competition has taken place in Moscow every four years since 1958. It was originally for pianists and violinists only but cellists were added from the second competition in 1962 and vocalists from third in 1966.
